Maybe rubber poles would be a good idea... no, seriously!

We had an RTA in Sefton last year which went like this:

1 - Car in lane 2 approaches traffic signals on a dual carriageway,

2 - Pedestrian decides to cross the approach from the nearside to
central reservation at the signals, crossing lane 1 then lane 2,

3 - Driver - approaching at 40mph - brakes hard and swerves to the
right to avoid the pedestrian,

4 - Pedestrian suddenly realises he is in trouble and runs to the
central res,

5 - Meanwhile, the car - while skidding out of control - collides with
the off side primary signal pole, demolishing it,

6 - The pole falls rapidly... on top of the pedestrian... rendering him
unconscious!

In this case, the pole clearly saved the pedestrian from further
injury. And to some degree, the less considerate observer may
incorporate the words 'justice' and 'poetic' in his/her comments on the
mater.
