I've experienced and read a lot on this topic.

The Type 3 auto is a very good unit (reliable). The Type 1 auto is OK as long as it is working - more NLA parts, I had vacuum problems. Bay auto trans get 80k or more miles before rebuild but parts are rare. The best part is the torque converter. The earlier Vanagon auto is more reliable than the 2k/1.9 Vanagon manual trans (long term), but the later 2.1 Vanagon manual is just as reliable. - The first thing I did was buy a backup trans for my '80. John Sanders agrees with this strategy. The EuroVan auto is much more un-reliable than the EuroVan manual trans due to plastic gear selection parts.

I really enjoyed the '85 (auto) Weekender. But we sold that and my wife doesn't like manual, so now I have to drive everywhere. :-(

why are they somewhat cheap on the samba??? are they good, are they reliable, i know nothing about them, what tells them when to shift?

figured this is a good topic for the tcb...discuss.
