Interesting. Thank you for the in depth explanation. I hooked it all up.
Buckminster is getting his juice-on.

The alternator has a voltage regulator in front of it but that's not 100%
protection in the system.  The question is, can he charge his battery without
disconnecting it.  The EFI systems in the early VWs weren't as fragile as most
people would believe.

I indicated he charge could as long as he kept the key off.   Changing ground
sources and jump starting it introduces other things into the equation.  If it
were my bus, I'd say just jump start it bearing in mind to keep the ground
connection last and furthest from either battery as to avoid sparks that could
cause an explosion.

So if that's the case what does your alternator do??  It's usually people that
do not know how to jump a car that cause these wives tales. ALWAYS use the
ground when jumping or disconnecting the battery!  When you jump a battery
using the positive terminal (RED) + what have you, it causes a voltage spikes.
 Hope this helps

But John Muir and my original manual expressly advise, in bold print, to
never accept a jump and to always disconnect the battery for both fast and
trickle charging.

No, don't disconnect the EFI or the battery unless you want to.  You can charge
it with everything hooked up and the key off.

My bus is fuel injected, so I have to disconnect the battery before hooking

Do I have to disconnect the negative terminal as well?

  A) It's hard to reach

  B) It's too cold to be unscrewing awkward crap if I don't have to.
  C) Yes. I am that lazy.

  Thanks for your time.
