Site of the Day for Thursday, October 17, 2013

        HistoryWorld

Today's site, an engaging blend of educational value and enjoyably structured
content, offers an outstanding history resource. Within this impressively
comprehensive presentation, Gentle Subscribers will discover fascinating facts
and even have a little fun.

"More than 1,000,000 words on world history in linked narratives ... More than
10,000 events from world history to search for timelines ... HistoryWorld's aim
is to make world history more easily accessible through interactive narratives
and timelines. ... it consists of about 300 narratives ( the alphabetical list
runs from Aegean Civilization to Zoroastrianism) and some 10,000 events on
searchable timelines." - from the website

Arranged into the major sections of History, Timelines, and Quizzes, the
presentation showcases various historical themes on its opening page; these in
turn lead to accounts of historical topics and events. The site is both
searchable and alphabetically browsable with hundreds of interconnected
narratives, while the timeline serves up an excellent historical overview, with
direct links to relevant articles. An additional feature, under the More tab,
includes a clever linkage with Google Maps to display global historical events
by region or country, which refer to HistoryWorld for more detailed
information. The deceptive little "Thenwhatnext" phrase at bottom right leads
to a chronological order game with dozens of topics from cartoon characters to
famous buildings to fictional detectives, along with more significant
categories.
