A lot has been written on this topic. See any of a number of
presentations / papers by Bruce Archambeault. Alternatively, there is
treatment of some of this in books by: Eric Bogatin, Lee Ritchey, Hall
and perhaps some others. A split by itself represents a discontinuity
in the return path that redistributes signal energy. Since the goal is
to deliver as much of the transmitter energy to the receiver as
possible, and keep a minimum of transmitter energy from going other
places, we want to avoid or minimize the resulting discontinuity. The
various references speak to a number methods that can be used to do this
and their relative effectiveness for different circumstances.
