The presentations by Cisco (huq.pdf) and Sigrity (chitwood.pdf) provided exactly what I was looking for. The total current predicted with an IBIS 3.2/4.1 model is very different from that predicted with an HSPICE model - at least for the considered HSTL buffer. I wonder if the situation is the same for other types of I/O technologies. Best regards.
