When I referred to "surface mount" I wasn't necessarily talking about
edge-launch (which, I guess, can be considered SMT) connectors.  I'm
concerned about middle-of-the-board straight SMB's, you know, normal to the
PCB surface. That's a 90degree turn right there, and, more than likely, with
vias to boot.

I'm beginning to lean towards making changes in order to make edge-launch
SMB's work with this design.
