I've had some very good luck with surface mount SMAs, getting a quiet = launch. It took a bit of ingenuity to make the transition from the = connector to surface traces clean, but it didn't require sophisticated = 3-D modeling - just intelligent thought. Most notably, the ground plane = was voided under the center conductor pad so that the pad didn't = represent a huge capacitance. I assume the same principles apply to SMB's. Of course, if you then have to transition to an inner layer, there will = be a further discontinuity caused by the via. A through-hole device = would only have the single discontinuity getting to an inner layer. I'm thinking of using an assembly = consisting of a 75ohm isolated bulkhead mount BNC crimped to Belden 1855A and onto = a right angle SMB connector. On the PCB end, I'm not sure if I should go = with through hole straight SMB or a surface mount version. My preference is = for surface mount but I've never used them. This would be a low connect/disconnect rate application. Any horror stories related to surface mount SMB? Are the advantages over through-hole significant? Layout recommendations? Also, can anyone recommend a source of good SMB connectors, both to = crimp onto a cable and for surface mount application. I found this company http://www.connectorcity.com/cdocs/f_prod.html but know nothing about = them.
