Hi Bala,

If its mounted on a circuit board then you can make out from its behavior on
board with DMM, the circuit section in which it is used and components
connected to its terminal. Like if it's in power section then it may be a LDO
or a Transistor switch or Thyristor or Power Supervisor/Reset chip etc.

If it's not mounted on board and if it's a transistor/thyristor then you may
use DMM in diode mode to check the conductivity among the pins and guess.
If it's an IC like OpAmp, Logic Gate/Buffer or any ASIC then it will not be
possible to make out with DMM and rather impossible to make out without the
knowledge of pin out.

Regards,
Tayyab

BTW with just 5 leads its probably a transistor and you can figure that out
with an ohm-meter.
