Hi All, I have been encountering low frequency currents from pulse width modulation controlled motors potentially causing interference to other higher frequency circuits lately. This month's Technical Tidbit on http://emcesd.com outlines a troubleshooting method for this type of problem. Abstract: Pulse width modulation controlled 3 phase motors have become popular in numerous applications from small fractional hp motors to giant industrial motors. Common mode currents generated by the controller circuits and motors can cause signal interference to other circuits at relatively low frequencies. At these low switching frequencies used, some shielding and circuit design techniques do not work well. The result can be interference to low level higher frequency circuits. Troubleshooting techniques are presented. ------------------------------------------------------- Upcoming public courses that I am teaching on high frequency measurements and noise at the continuing education departments of Oxford University and UC Berkeley: * March 4-5, 2003 at UC Berkeley Extension in San Francisco, CA http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/eng/elec/313544.html * June 24-25, 2003 at Oxford University in Oxford, England as part of Oxford University's Digital Design Week http://www.conted.ox.ac.uk/cpd/electronics/courses/high_frequency_measurements.asp Have a good month, Doug -- ------------------------------------------------------- ___ _ Doug Smith \ / ) P.O.
