Laurie is correct. In order to do what the AKC calls an "in-ring
observation," the observer must already be an approved judge of another
breed. There are also qualifications required of the judge being observed.
However, the Futurity/Maturity is not an AKC event...therefore if
the PC wanted to allow an observer the AKC wouldn't be involved.
There are other rules that go along with this program, too.
I think the ringside mentoring is the best way to go, tho...much
better than in ring observations (I love the term "shadow judge" and
wish I could remember who said that)...but ringside mentoring is
wonderful and WILL count as one item when the mentored one applies for
judging approval. The observing would not count, you see.
Best idea would be to have a group of judges or breed experts doing
the mentoring and the "would be judges" have to change mentors half way
through judging..or maybe even more than that. It could be a really
wonderful education program...
