Mentoring is all well and good if it's to learn ring procedure but that can be
learned just from watching outside the ring at various shows. The problem with
a mentoring program arises when one judge is influencing a "potenial" judges
views of the standard. For example, I attended a Futurity a few years ago in
which the judge from the specialty the previous day was in the ring "mentoring"
the Futurity judge. Many of us sitting ringside overheard her tell the Futurity
judge "That was my class winner yesterday. I didn't place that dog at all
yesterday. That was my Best Puppy/Opposite sex puppy from yesterday." Low and
behold, the Futurity judge put up all the dogs that the other judge said she
had given classes or placed in almost the exact order from the previous day
(slight changes from the Futurity age classes and the specialty puppy classes).
