Norma brings up a vital point.
1. Our entries are dropping - So also are they in all breeds. That we remain
#2 in popularity and have significantly fewer entries tells a big story. The
sport of pure bred dogs is falling in favor of other activities that are
attracting the interest and finances of the American people.
2. We are still having our national shows and trying to do them the same as we
did with 1,100 entries and also make money. Costs of everything have risen, and
the cost of facilities are up also. If this trend continues we will not make
money by having the shows in any location. We cannot create an 20 trillion club
debt like our nation has.
Does that mean that the problems of the GSDCA finances and of our national show
are in need of total rethinking? This really is a greater problem than
locations and board decisions. This is a problem of our need to rethink and
change our expectations, patterns or doing things and the reshaping of our
structures as a club. If we cannot stem the tide of smaller entries, and to
some degree we may not be able to, then possibly we must re-size our nationals,
our administration and our expectations.
Is this picture too bleak to even consider or is it a reality we need to accept
and deal with?

i have been going to nationals since 1963.
there have been 15 nationals on the west coast. 6 in southern cal, 3 in
arizona, 3 in colorado, 1 each in washington, oregon and utah. one third of the
population of the USA lives west of the mississippi River.two thirds live east
of it.
We have had 4 nationals in Texas, 1 in Oklahoma, 2 in kansas,5 now in
Missouri,1 in Tenn, 2 in kentucky,1 in Michigan, 4 in Ohio(20) On the East
coast 1 in Florida, 7 in Georgia, 1 in North Carolina. 2 in New Jersey, 2 in
Penn, and 3 in New York(16) Our largest national entry in conformation was
1100. the smallest 275. The average entry over those years about 650. With the
entries dropping notice that our conformation entry is now half that number.
But the interesting thing is that the specials entry remains about the same
year after year after year. It is the class entry that is dropping. The answer
is not to offer dumb classes liked COATED ones but go back to offering classes
like OFA or must have performance title classes.Our performance entry is going
up so lets get the performance dogs back in the breed ring again.How about a
class of CHIC certified dogs only. Temperament is very important.
