I've been on Facebook too much, keep looking to hit the "like" button :)
I agree with this 110%. The use of the stick is part of the test of
nerves and mental strength. it is NOT about teaching a dog to accept
pain, in fact most dogs never receive a true hit. The "hits" are
generally very glancing blows, nothing direct. It's really about
testing their response to a threat. Yes you can teach a dog to
accept it, but trust me if the dog doesn't "have it" then all the
training in the world will only take you so far, and when the pressure
is on the true temperament will come to the surface. I've been there!
Have had a couple of dogs wash out after showing weakness on the
stick hits.
I did have one awesome bicolor bitch years ago who, on her first ever
stick threat by a helper, ran up his body and latched on to the stick.
He was quite shocked.....I wasn't!
