My first reaction was, "Why would you buy these dogs?' There are instances of puppies with health problems, as there always have been. But, the major breeders seem to be breeding away from problems, and breeding better dogs today than any time in the past. Now, that does not mean they will sell them to the buyers, or that there still aren't problems. But, overall the breed has improved every year, due to honest breeders breeding for better dogs. For over 30 years now, I have listened to some people tell me how great the breed used to be. I remember in the 70s, hearing how in the 40s, there were great animals, and that the breed was now on the road to ruin. We heard the same thing in the 80s, and here we are after the turn of the century listening to people say the same thing. These are the same people who would tell you how much harder kids had it in the past, how the new generation is going to hell in a hand basket, and kids aren't respectful like "we used to be." How we used to walk through the snow to school every day, up hill both ways, (and that is in California), and how we had ten hours of homework before the noon break. How, we used to live on a moldy crust of bread, and did not have paper to write on, and had to use tree bark. We were issued one pencil the first day of school, and had to make it last all year. We didn't have computers and had to calculate our fractions using pieces of string. How we never had cars, but took turns carrying each other back and forth to our classes. We had such sickness and no medication, but had to eat grubs and bugs to get protein in our diets. We didn't have television, movies or plays, and had to entertain ourselves by watching paint dry on the neighbor's house. Kids today have it so much easier. Sure, they do! Be careful you don't look at everything from the perspective of an old fart. The breed is doing great, the entries may be down, but that does not reflect the quality of the breed in general. You will always be able to find a bad dog if you look hard enough. But, today our breed has improved in all aspects, and while we have not finished in improving the breed, we are working on it.
