I am saddened by the news of Tom Larkinâ??s death. He got his start in
shepherds working for Grant Mann and carried with him a lot of knowledge he
got
from Grant.
He and Mary Ann along with Barbara and Doyle Williams and Shirley and Morrie
McWilliams started the Orange County (now Orange Coast) GSDC. He was very
outgoing and if a new person showed up he would be the first to make them
welcome. Tom was the kind of guy it was impossible for anyone to dislike.
While those of us who knew him survive, he will survive in our memories.

At the Sacramento GSDC specialty one year Tom was walking on the showgrounds
when our friend Pat Chapman walked up with a bitch puppy and asked him to go
over it. Tom looked up at the sky and rolled his eyes then decided to go
over the bitch since he was only judging males and intersex that day. Pat,
thinking only of the bitch judging, had forgotten that Tom was judging at all
that day. As she saw Tom enter the ring she was mortified. Later, when he
was judging best puppy there was the same puppy, she having won her class, and
he awarded her best puppy. Her name was Krescentâ??s Honey and as Tom said in
his write up she was a honey. She later was BIF under Virginia McCoy.

After the Reno specialty in 1970 a bunch of us including Barbara Amidon who
had judged that day were at a casino, when Tom spotted a bearded guy at a
black jack table and told Barbara that there was Al Hirt, a star trumpet
player
from New Orleans. Barbara immediately went over and asked for his autograph.
Let me tell you that this guy was thrilled beyond belief that this chick
was his fan. Only problem, it was not Al Hirt, it was a bit player for Disney
who had never been asked for his autograph before and he did not know that
Barbara thought he was Al Hirt, but it was a career day for him. And Tom? He
never would own up as to whether he had really thought it was Al Hirt, but
we all agreed the guy did look quite a bit like Al.

Other reminiscences will continue to come to mind as we think of Tom. All
my memories are good ones.
