We have done the same with Boss. He was a bi color that carried
the black factor ( and in fact...is where many of the blacks today
come from ) <G>
Bred him to a sable that also carried the black factor.
Therefore...she produced her sable coloring and her black recessive
and Boss produced his Bi color and his black recessive.
Got sables and blacks and bi colors.
This has nothing to do with black to black though.

A solid black is double recessive for solid black.
In other words...blacks carry ONLY the black factor.
They can only produce blacks when bred to a black.
Black and tans or sables carry the color they ARE
( the color or marking you see ) and another color
pattern. ( GSD's carry two colors....one you see
and the one you don't see )
When the 'other color' is for blacks ...you can or will
get blacks from the breeding to a black....or you can
get blacks from two black and tans or a sable and a
black and tan if their 'other color' is for black.
It's a recessive....like long coats. Easy to breed IN
and easy to breed OUT.
Blacks ONLY carry black.

I think you could get blacks and b/t Black is a recessive gene not a
dominant gene. If you bred Sable to Sable which is dominant I believe you
would get a litter of sables.
