Hi Kris,
We do want to do away with puppy mills but, in the process, we do not want
to punish good responsible breeders just because they happen to whelp a couple
of large litters or co-own a bitch with a friend. Responsible breeders are
not necessarily the result of number of puppies sold or litters whelped,
etc. You may want to review some of the List e-mails from Peggy Mickelson,
Stormy Hope and others regarding this issue - they have been quite lucid in
explaining their concerns about the proposed PAWS bill.
Personally, it is not likely that I would be affected by PAWS since I breed
one litter every four or five years but I find it too discriminatory and
invasive of people's rights. I also have a lot of concerns with AKC
partnering
with organizations like HSUS and the Doris Bill Animal Rights group. And,
after reading the statements of the AKC President, Jim Holt, in the AKC
Gazette
where he proposes that AKC would do the kennel inspections for the USDA, I am
convinced that it is solely to establish a financial relationship with this
agency - all at the expense of the small breeders. It is very disappointing.
