While Joan's statistics are interesting, I think that they need a further
interpretation. Looking exclusively entries by state is deceiving, the US
congress has tried to resolve this population anomaly by have a bicameral
system of government. We need to look at the area the state covers as well.
California is a HUGE state. and while it has the largest entries, add three
small states(NY, PA, NJ) together, you will find a much greater number of
entries per square mile. NY,NJ and PA added together gives you 267 entries,
add just two of the five New England states, (CT,MA) and you are now up to 343
entries. 343 entries over an area that is still significantly smaller than
California, Wisconsin or Florida,
Add Ohio and we're now looking at 447. Clearly the National needs to be in PA
or NY to minimize the travel distance for the most exhibitors. I believe if
you looked at the membership you would also find a very high density of members
the North East.
We also have excellent agility, strong obedience, good sheep and lovely fall
weather.

These are the states in order with membership that enter dogs at the
National. I tried it put dogs that were entered at handlers addresses in
their owners states.
I did not have access to herding names so that is not included.
Obedience, agility, rally, tracking are.
