To further add to what Lee has stated...there is an old adage "a picture speaks a thousand words" the NIS is geared toward those new judges who may be unfamiliar to our breed. Many new judges will view the illustrations and formulate an opinion about the overall appearance of our breed...Some will then read the verbiage..then compare it to the illustrations...some will not read the verbiage..only view the disqualifying faults of our breed..and rely solely on the illustrations. The fact that this project is called the new ILLUSTRATED standard...should give rise to the importance of the visual representation of our breed. it is of the utmost importance that the illustrations capture the essence of the breed as it is today.. Last year I had an opportunity to view a version of the NIS...as a scrolled down the first page or so..I saw a photo of what was supposed to be a "typical" GSD puppy..this typical puppy..had big round yellow eyes...so I ask..what does this say to someone unfamiliar with our breed? to me it says..big round yellow eyes are the norm and are to be considered "typical".Grant you..on a scale of faults..we know that this isn't one of the most serious ones..however..we do not want it misinterpreted that this is "typical" as then you will have those who misconstrue this as being "desired" Other aspects of the version of the NIS that I viewed last Fall.. also fell miserably short with serious faults,,ie weak back..short flat croup...insufficient angulation front an rear..high tail set, etc, being labeled as "ideal"dog Although I have not viewed the most current version( and it may be vastly improved)...it is my understanding form what I have read on the List...that the last version viewed by the Board, also fell miserably short. If this also ends up being case with the most current version..then I am in agreement that it should be tabled and revisited at a different time...I don't think the concept should be scrapped..as it is a worthwhile project..but perhaps some new input needs to brought into the matter and many who understand the essence of the breed..both judges and breeders alike should be consulted. I studied many breeds in the last 10 years and it is very interesting to see their current illustrated standard and then going back in old books and seeing what they look like but then. Some are so different they don't even look like the same breed. > > Do you need any more reasons or are you convinced we need a new IS? > > Do you really want the judges to go in the ring looking for a GSD that looks like the one of 50 years ago? > > Lee Brown > ============================================================================ > POST is Copyrighted 2005.
