I'm not sure who trained him, but after the movie was made Jerry Lee worked for
a CA police dept where he was killed in the line of duty. An article appeared
in the Review concerning this.

Strongheart, first German Shepherd Dog with name-above-the-title billing in
film. "The first great dog star;" German shepherd owned & trained by Jane
Murfin. Strongheart was the screen name of Etzel von Oeringen (October 1,
1917-June 24, 1929), a German shepherd that became one of the earliest
canine film stars. After being trained in Germany as a police dog, he was
brought to the United States by husband-and-wife film-makers Laurence
Trimble and Jane Murfin. He appeared in several movies, including a 1925
adaptation of White Fang. Some of these pictures were highly successful, and
did much to encourage the popularity of the breed, but most have been lost.
A popular celebrity in his day, Strongheart paved the way for the much
better remembered Rin Tin Tin. Strongheart and his mate Lady Jule had many
offspring and their line survives to this day. In 1929 while filming a movie
Strongheart accidentally fell against hot studio lights and was burned.
These burns caused a tumor to form and Strongheart died as a result of it.

Rex (a.k.a Reginald von Ravenhorst) from Kommissar Rex is a popular
Austrian-made police television drama. The series is set in Vienna and
focuses on the three-man staff of an office of the Kriminalpolizei - the
Austrian Crime Squad - specifically a Mordkommission, or Homicide
Commission. In addition to the three policemen, the office is staffed by a
German Shepherd called Rex (or Reginald von Ravenhorst, to give his full
name) who functions variously as a cadaver dog, a sniffer dog (for both
contraband and narcotics) and as another pair of eyes and ears for his team.

The Littlest Hobo
is the title of a 1958 American motion picture, a Canadian-produced
television series based upon the film that aired from 1963 to 1965 and a
second Canadian series (a revival) that aired on CTV from 1979 to 1985.

Ace the Bat-Hound
Ace was a German Shepherd originally owned by an engraver named John Wilker.
He was found by Batman and Robin after his master was kidnapped by a gang of
counterfeiters.

That was fun...good night!
