N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Affairs Division FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WEDNESDAY, DEC. 21, 2005 Pet food company with distribution in North Carolina removes products from sale RALEIGH Diamond Pet Foods, a Missouri company with distribution in North Carolina, has notified its distributors to hold the sale of all its pet foods formulated with corn that were produced in its Gaston, S.C., facility, because the products could contain aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is found in corn and other crops. It is a naturally occurring toxic chemical byproduct from the growth of a fungus in the Aspergillus family. Aflatoxin poisoning is fatal to animals. The products removed from sale include a variety of dog and cat foods. â??Our inspectors are out making sure this product is removed from shelves, and taking samples for analysis of these products outside the recall dates,â?? said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. â??If you have purchased any of these products, return them to the store where you bought them. Do not feed them to your pet.â?? Symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning include lethargy or sluggishness, occasional vomiting, bloody diarrhea and sudden death. Troxler urged pet owners to contact their veterinarian immediately if their pet shows signs of illness. The following products made at the Gaston, S.C., facility have been removed from sale: Diamond Low Fat Dog Food Diamond Hi-Energy Dog Food Diamond Maintenance Dog Food Diamond Performance Dog Food Diamond Premium Adult Dog Food Diamond Puppy Food Diamond Maintenance Cat Food Country Value Puppy Country Value Adult Dog Country Value Higher Energy Dog Country Value Adult Cat Food Professional Chicken & Rice Senior Dog Food Professional Reduced Fat Chicken & Rice Dog Food Professional Adult Dog Food Professional Large-Breed Puppy Food Professional Puppy Food Professional Reduced Fat Cat Food Professional Adult Cat Food The Gaston facility date codes are unique from other Diamond facility codes in that either the 11th or 12th character in the code will be a capital â??G.â?? The range of date codes being reviewed are â??Best By 01-March-07â?? through â??Best By 10-June-07.â?? Diamondâ??s quantitative analysis records substantiate that the companyâ??s corn shipments were clear of aflatoxin after Dec. 10. As such, the recall does not affect products with date codes of â??Best By 11-June-07â?? or later. Products manufactured at Diamond Pet Foods facilities in Meta, Mo., and Lathrop, Calif., are not affected by the recall. The South Carolina facility services a 22-state region from Mississippi to Maine. Diamond is analyzing retained samples of all products produced in the Gaston, S.C., facility so the company can isolate specific lot numbers affected. The company said it would supply the information to distributors, retailers and customers as quickly as possible.
