I feel sorry for anyone who goes through this. We could never find out if
Big Ben had this, as we x-rayed him when he showed signs of a hip or back
problem and he had two herniated discs. But, we think he did have DM, and
we think his sire did as well, but could not prove it. Now, in hind-sight,
I am sorry he produced so many quality animals, but at least we can now
find out what they produce and how safe they are, with the test.
We now use the test exculsively. It is yet another tool. We just bred an
Army daughter who tested clean for DM. We have five Ben puppies, and we
will test them all.
I think the DM test is a great tool. How well it works will only be known
in another generation or two. I have seen dogs with great hips and free from
DM go down with other problems. I have seen dogs with terrible hips live
to 13 with no problems.
We can only do the best we can with what we have. I am old enough to
remember when we did not x-ray elbows. Now, that is a must for any stud dog.
We continue to improve our breed and gain the tools we need to do so.
