Rodinal generally produces somewhat coarser grain than other developers but in my experience its not much greater than T-Max RS. The "sharpness" meaning acutance of Rodinal depends on its dilution. At 1:25 it does not have much acutance effect but at 1:100 the effect is quite strong. It is never a mushy developer. Rodinal is also somewhat opposite of many other developers. Generally developers with a considerable sulfite content, like D-76, produce somewhat coarser grain when diluted, Rodinal grain becomes somewhat finer when diluted. Tri-X 400 is a general purpose film with a medium toe, Tri-X 320 is a very long toe film intended for studio use. Compared on the same subject and with the same highlight and shadow points chosen for printing the 320 version will produce somewhat darker mid grays and somewhat higher contrast highlights. The 320 film is useful when you want brilliant highlights and rather low contrast shadows. The 400 film is better for all around use. See the data sheets for the characteristic curves which will make this plain. Thanks Jeff.
