Richard, (and Marc)
Was the Xenar available pre-WWII?
This site doen't make that clear:
http://www.siufai.dds.nl/Rolleiflex35_TLR.htm
I remember somewhere seeing scans of old catalogs with the Xenar listed a
few dollars less than the Tessar but don't remember the camera model or the
timeframe....
Jeff
The Xenar became available as an alternative to the Tessar on cameras
made after WW-2. F&H may have begun using Schneider as a second source
because of production problems at the two versions of Zeiss. The Xenar
version of the Automat sold for a slightly lower price than the Tessar
version. Xenars also became available in the deluxe version of the
Rolleicord about this time. Pre-war Rolleicords had Zeiss Triotar lenses, a
Triplet rather than a Tessar type. The Xenar is a Tessar type but not a
copy of the Zeiss prescription. From many reports its quality is equal to
the Tessar.
