Thor, In every area of consumer goods, brands that have the status of market or technology leaders can command out-of-the-ordinary prices. Leica is making a premium range of products that mainstream camera companies don't want to bother with. That lack of competition ,coupled with low production volumes inevitably leads to high prices. High prices for new goods = high prices on the second-hand market as long as the demand exists. There can be no doubt that Canon or Nikon could make a lens of equal performance to the 35 Summilux, but how many would they sell, and would it be worth their while? Recall that the very expensive - by Nikon standards - 28 mm 1.4 Nikkor was withdrawn after selling in relatively small quantities. It is now in demand and sells fore than its original price.
