Eric, with that much of the coating gone why does it not have a detrimental
effect? Can a lens in this condition be recoated successfully?

I don't think so, I think it's a coating condition. I've seen it on
many if not most Planars of the era. In my experience it has no effect
on performance...
Todd Belcher or Harry Fleenor might just in here...
