There is a certain pleasantness in handling the Yashica. Japanese industrial design almost always took ease of use into account. I don't how to say this without sounding funny, but there's an early Toyota like feel to the thing. I like the rewind knob being on the same side of the focus knob, but man is it cobbled together. The 635 is set up to run 135 format, and the crop frame is a box applied to the underside of the ground glass, but the ground glass is not set in place firmly. it can slide up or down almost a 4mm (parallax correction correction perhaps).

When, for the first time, I looked into the innards of a Rollei, the sheer beauty of its mechanical execution literally took my breath away. That was decades ago and the memory is still vivid.

Over many years I have owned maybe 4 Yashicamats. Although used least, they required more repairs than all my other photo equipment combined, ever. OTOH, a member of our local photo community had used one for team photos, hundreds of rolls every season over many years with no problems whatever. Y'mats are actually pleasant to use and can produce decent results. However, my current plan is to never acquire another.

Personally, I wouldn't take any camera with me in a canoe.

Well my curiosity is satisfied, I didn't pay too much, and now I have a back-up TLR I can take places I wouldn't dare take my 2.8C (like the canoe).

Having once held a Yashica TLR and felt how lightweight and plasticky it was was enough for me to stick with my Rolleiflexes and 'cords. I'm sure they are capable of good images (as was my couple of Seagull TLRs....while they lasted) but I cannot fathom why people pay $200 or more for a Yashica TLR when you can get a very decent Rolleicord, and a CLA, and the cost would be the same (heck, with patience even a Rolleiflex can be found for about the same).

This guy (see left hand column: Yashica) seems to have some pretty strong opinion drawn from his experience too:

I just started tinkering around with a Yashica TLR (thanks Jerry), and while I'm excited to have it, and look forward to shooting it, I just thought I'd reflect for a moment on the perfection that is the Rolleiflex TLR. Optics aside (not that an amateur like myself could really take full advantage of them) the construction is truly a marvel. What a privilege it is to own one. Not ever having the ability to make the comparison before, I know enough not to be surprised, but I'm impressed even more.
