Richard, press BOTH the flash button and the timer button simultaneously.  
You'll see a dot inside a rectangle appear in the LCD on the back when in spot 
focus/meter mode.  The 2 "night" flash modes seem to disable spot mode.  It 
works in any other flash mode, however, including flash off.
 
The camera defaults back to non-spot mode every time it powers-down and it 
defaults to flash "on" too....
 
Virtually every shot is focussed where I want it when I use spot mode.  
 
Point where you want to focus, push shutter button halfway down until you get 
the green LED in the viewfinder, then while still holding the button half down, 
recompose and shoot.
