Hello John:
After the WWII, the "automat" feature became a well
known improvement for the 6x6 Rolleiflex and F&H decided to eliminate
the "Automat" term from the commercial name for these cameras (as CZ
eliminated the red "T" from Rollei lenses when lens coating use became
common for lenses) and then they manufactured a model called
"Rolleiflex 3.5" simply, it was also known like "Rolleiflex X" because
it had X sync for the flash, but since the models often had
improvements, they started to use the letter that was part of the
factory internal code for the model to identify it commercially and
then you have the 3.5A or "M-X", the 3.5B or "MX-EV" up to the 3.5C;
Rollei users in the States mainly perceived that the 3.5C was close to
the 2.8E and had almost nothing to do with the 2.8C and then the 3.5C
became 3.5E, Rollei learnt the market perception and called "F" the
3.5 model that would be almost identical regarding the projected
"2.8F", both cameras couldn't be introduced together because the
Rolleiflex body had no room for the complex Differential Compur
shutter 0 size necessary for the 2.8 lens, there was only room for the
Differential Compur shutter 00 size used for the 3.5F first version,
this issue was solved when Rollei engineers and technicians developed
the little"Kegelrad differential" that allowed to use the regular
Compur shutters for the 2.8F and 3.5F. The Rolleiflex T and
Rollei-Magic were 3.5 models out of the regular 6x6 Rolleiflex 3.5 top
models line.

As Marc explained previously, when Rollei introduced the 2.8A it was
the first 6x6 Rolleiflex model and it was the only Rolleiflex 6x6 2.8
in the market, and then it was known and it was called "Rolleiflex
2.8" simply, however when Rollei introduced the Rolleiflex 2.8B, it
was necessary to add the "A" to the first model, this letter was
already in the factory internal code from the beginning, from the 2.8
A was a prototype, but it was commercially used after the 2.8B
introduction.
