The standard 3.5F and 2.8F shutters were cross-coupled -- that is, the meter includes an index marker which indicates the exposure which the current settings will produce. Opening the aperture or lowering the shutter speed will move the needle one way, while closing the aperture or raising the shutter speed will move it the other way. The trick is to shift the shutter speed and aperture so that this index marker matches up with the light meter's needle, and then Bob is oestensibly your avuncular relative, albeit this leaves out conditions such as contre-jour and the like.
