It was standard Carl Zeiss Jena practice from around 1930 up to the 1950's to engrave a truncated serial number on the rear lens cell. This is quite handy when working with early Soviet lenses for the Kiev RF, as we can readily identify badge-engineered Zeiss lenses, such as my 2/8.5cm Jupiter 9.
