Well, if she does take it offline, that will be only 499,999 menaces to
go. I don't know if that figure includes all the POS (point of sale) and
other embedded versions of XP out there. I suspect most of those
(including many of the ATM machines still running XP) will fall under
enterprise contracts that will maintain life-support updates. It's only
us peons that are being pushed to upgrade. If you have enough machines
and pays enough money, you can still get updates for XP.
For those not able to update before April 8, there are things you can do
to make the system much safer. There was a recent study done that
indicates 92% of the overall threats to XP can be mitigated by simply
running as a standard user rather than as an admin. Furthermore, 100% of
browser based threats are eliminated by making that simple change. Of
course, before you do make this change, you want to make sure you have
an "enabled" and "functional" admin account in place. It's far better to
upgrade to Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1, but if that isn't practicable,
you can hang with XP a bit longer if you are well-informed, be smart
about what you are doing online and do what you can to harden XP as much
as possible.
