But, if it has network capability and you are using a router, then you should
still be able to connect it without having to use the cable after the initial
setup.

Hi Jim,

At this point, all I know is that I have a Cannon printer (I thought it was HP,
but it's a Cannon NMI). It is currently connected to my Windows PC which I hope
to say sianara to by Thanksgiving. I'm trying to figure out how to connect it o
my MacBook Pro. A tech connected the printer for me, (and since I'm at work I
don't know whether I'm dealing with a USB; I can discover that tonight). The
printer is about 3 years old. And of course it's twice the length and width of
the MacBook!

I don't believe it has wi fi capability.

Are you wanting to print wirelessly from the Macbook Pro?
There are several ways to accomplish this, it's much easier to connect the
printer via USB, but here is one way to print if the printer is on the network
via WiFi..

You may be able to use a USB connection to set up Wi-Fi printing:

1. Connect the printer to your Mac using the appropriate USB cable.
2. Install the Mac software that came with the printer, and make sure that it
includes a printer setup assistant. 3. Use the printer setup assistant to
connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network. Check the printer's documentation
for details.
4. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and Mac. The printer should remain
connected to the Wi-Fi network.

I'm going to face a similar challenge with my new MacBook Pro. Do you get this
app in the Mac App or App Stor?

Did she install the HP Eprint app? That may let the iPad connect to the
printer.

Almost certainly a Windows only printer. They require the OS to do much of the
processing that once was done on-board the printer itself. Off loading that
processing to the computer is one of the big reasons printers are so cheap and
throw-away items any more.
