Yesterday nite I was talking with Darryl about an idea I had about the music in our game, and he asked me to post it on the mailing-list to discuss it. It is something like a mix of two concepts that I saw in another two games (Command&Conquerer: Red Alert & Spring Break). In Command&Conquerer: Red Alert (which is a RTS game), the player (in offline mode)has got to complete many missions to win the game... everytime he completes a mission he wins something like a prize, or a reward, which consists of a new soundtrack. Then, the player can choose the music which will be played during the next missions from the group of soundtracks he won. On Spring Breack the player has got something like a winamp player: he has got a certain number of tracks saved on the HD, and he can choose that they will be played randomly by the PC, or that they will be played following a precise order he has to choose. Well... my idea about our game is this: We will have a certain number of tracks which will be played by a sub-section of the program of our future client: normally they will be played in connection with the enviroment the player's character is into. Example: if a player is walking inside a park, with trees, etc... it will be played a relaxing theme. If a player is walking inside a dark dungeon, it wil played a frightening theme, etc.. and so on. I will call this as "enviroment-connected-music". But the player should have also the possibility to choose the track he prefers amongst those ones the game has got (I will call it "player's-choice-music"). So I think that, in the music options, we must give the player the possibility to choose if he wants "environment-conected-music" or "player's-choice-music", and in case he chooses the second option we should visualize the differents tracks saved in the HD (in the client directory) to permit him to choose the one he likes best. Moreover I think there should be "secret tracks", which are blocked. If the player will complete a difficoult quest/mission, or if he will defeat a particular terrible monster, etc., a secret track will be un-blocked, and the player will be able to see that track in the list of tracks connected with the "player's-choice-music" option. It will be like a "reward", or a "prize"... I think it could be a nifty feature. What do you think about? Enrico
