Take the picture, close the envelope, and remove it without processing by using this little lever. This is also useful when you want to use the Polaroid processing later. This is handy when you want to shoot pictures rapidly or when its too hot or cold for processing. After the envelope is removed it can be peeled apart in the darkroom and the film part removed for conventional processing.
