It is a principal of optics that anything on the surface of a lens
cannot be imaged by that lens. The only result of a few specks of paint
would be to cause a miniscule reduction in the total amount of light
passing though the lens. There is absolutely no chance of an shadows
appearing on the negative. Another principle of optics says that every
portion of a lens contributes to the every portion of the image.

Years ago, when certain kinds of optical glass was difficult to make,
lenses were sold with a small bubble or two in one or more elements.
I'm not talking about off brand lenses but lenses from reputable
companies. Such imperfections did not effect their performance. I had
a 28mm f/2.5 wide angle with a huge front element which had a very
prominent bubble in the front element. Never could detect any
degradation of image quality.

Subject: [pure-silver] (slightly OT) little black spots in Zuiko lens

Hi,

My current 35mm gear is a Olympus OM-2 with Zuiko lenses. The standard =
=3D
50/1.8 lens shows a couple (3-5) of tiny blacks spots between the =3D
elements (presumably flacked of black paint. I first assumed this =3D
particular to this single lens, but I obtained 2 other specimens of this
=3D lens of varying age, which also show this phenomena.

So my question is: will these spots seriously influence the lens =3D
performance, so much that it will show on a print? I must admit that I =
=3D
did not see any signs of that. But I mostly shoot 4*5, and MF and I am =
=3D
always disappointed if I occasionally print 35 mm ( more grain =3D
(obviously) and less sharpness and definition, perhaps also obvious)..

thanks,

best,
