The following is a formula for a combination toner made
of commercial toners. It is similar in results to Kodak
Polytoner but is not the same.
Water 500.0 ml
KBT 80.0 ml
KRST 20.0 ml
Sodium Carbonate, monohydrated 40.0 grams
Water to make 1.0 liter
Hmm, 30 minutes, is way too long for me to wait..
But this formula is much quicker.. I might give it a
try.
Thanks Richard,
J

The above tones very quickly, too quickly for reliable
partial toning. I suspect that reducing the amount of
Carbonate would slow it down but have not experimented with
that.
KBT at 100F will tone in 2 to 5 minutes and is excellent
for partial toning because it does not split tone. I don't
think the above does either but its hard to tell. The
combination formula works best on warm tone paper. On cold
tone paper it shifts to a slightly purple color. On warm
tone papers it produces reddish brown. Kodak published two
additional formulas using a combination of KBT and KRST.
These were published before they began to make Polytoner.
These formulas use Kodalk rather than Carbonate. Since
Kodalk is lower in pH it might result in slower toning but
the instructions for the other formulas suggest they tone
pretty fast at room temperature. The main difference between
the two Kodak formulas is the ratio of the two toners. The
ratio given above is not fixed but I don't know what effect
changing it has on image color.
