If I'm understanding the Jobo webpage right the old style reels are just normal Hewes reels but they can't take the core. The new kind need the plastic core. To quote the webpage "The center cores serve 3 purposes. First, they provide a way to easily pour the chemicals into the tanks. Secondly, they form part of the light trap design of the tanks, and finally they provide a way to secure the reels into the tanks so that when the tank rotates, the reels rotate too."
