Is it your contention that the portion of the picture that contains the clouds with lightening was somehow held back from the rest of the exposure. The photographer waited maybe 15 to 20 minutes with some hand held card the exact shape of clouds not yet in the scene so he could get the lightening bolt his prescience foretold was coming. Stars are moving millimeters from clouds that are the wrong color on the edges and have a different sharpness than the rest of the scene. Where are the bright highlight reflections from the bolts on the water? The water below the right most bolt is black. I judge that Time magazine would probably use this image for a cover.
