Most of the iron remival products which use dithionite form acidic solutions when dissolved, usually sodium bisulfate is present in the powder mixture.

I've used the earlier Kodak Kit intended for Panatomic-X and found it convenient to do all of the processing with solutions, avoiding the need to remove the film from the reel for reexposure then reloading it for the second development. This obviously is a personal preference and not an insurmountable hurdle.
