Bogdan,
If you need emergency communications rent a sat phone.
Goggle "Satellite Phone". Rates are competitive and reasonable, you can rent
by week, it is very easy and if you are in the clear they work great.

Subject: [pure-silver] Death Valley Photography

Hello all,

I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank all the individuals who
responded to my question about doing photography in Death Valley. Never
realized that so many people in this group had been to Death Valley.

I not only received a wealth a suggestions for film exposures and such
but I also received a wealth of information, sources, and reminders of
how to survive in the heat of Death Valley. I have followed up the
leads and am now better acquainted with the place. As for the
reminders, staying hydrated, clothing, boots, etc., I am taking them
very seriously and appreciate the time that many persons took to answer
me, both on list and off list. It's great to know that I can always
count on the members of this group. I will be very careful. I intend
to come back and tell you how I conquered the extreme contrast problem ;)

By the way, I did find out about the cell phone situation in case of
an emergency. Cell phones do not work in Death Valley and environs.

Just one last question. There are a number of things that I will want
to pick up when I get there, styrofoam cooler, road flares, 5-10 gal
water container.... I'll be flying into Las Vegas around noon and
picking up my rental car and then driving to Tecopa Hot Springs where I
am staying, 2-3 hours away. I was thinking that an Army Surplus store
might be the best place to pick up some of the supplies that I need. If
anybody knows Vegas and can give me directions to an Army Surplus or
something similar, from the the Airport, it would save me a lot of time
looking and probably not finding anything. I have a map of Vegas, so
just give me the directions.

And on that note, a great big Thank You to everybody who contributed to
making this a great trip. Getting ready for it is half the fun. THANKS!

Cheers,
Bogdan
