This was Barry Thornton's criticism, i.e. for roll film sizes the increased development produced sufficient grain to negate much of the benefit of pyrogallol. He then formulated a pyrocatechol developer which he claimed reduced this effect. I'm wondering if my Zone VI 2-tube VC head is producing some UV, since i don't find anywhere near this often quoted difference between graded and VC paper. On the other hand, although my PMK negs looked distinctly different to non-stained negs, they never looked as dramatically stained as some examples I've seen on the net.
