I have been using a 12 DC volt to 110 AC adapter from Radio shack for about a year with out any trouble.

Yes, the battery pack for off-the-shelf batteries would be helpful. We inquired when we bought our PTR1 quite some time ago about having a 12-volt adapter so the PlexTalk could be plugged into a cigarette lighter outlet in a car. At least you wouldn't have to run out of battery when listening on road trips or have to plug it in all night to get a very few more hours. We were told at the time that there was no such animal... OK, so I'm paraphrasing... and that using an adapter, such as from Radio Shack, even if it was rated and polarized properly, would not be a good idea. I don't know why this should be such a touchy issue. Either the battery pack or the 12-volt adapter or both would be very useful accessories to have.

Is there anywhere I can purchase a unit that will plug in the back of the PTR1, where the AC adapter goes, that holds off the shelf batteries. This would be a good idea for a back up to the battery pack.
thank you
