Greetings fellow photographers. Over the years I’ve accumulated several external hard drives to back up photos. In my attempt to ‘get better organized’ and be able to find older photos I want to retrieve, I just went from ACR to Lightroom (though I haven’t done anything with it yet)and thought I’d get a 3TB external to get everything into one place. I’d be interested in comments regarding this issue and if anyone is actually using a Cloud format as a back up. Edpov@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I've been using Amazon Web Services Simple Storage Solutions (AWS S3) since about 2009 for all the photos/images of any sort I put up on my web site.
Been meaning to mention AWS S3 for some time when the question of Cloud storage comes up.
Guess this might be the "wholesale" version of the "retail" Amazon Cloud Drive, since I'm sure they both use the same backend infrastructure.
I pay for bulk storage (negligible), traffic up as I add photos, and traffic down as people view photos; currently about $4.50 a month.
I'm sure your cost would be less, since the majority of my cost is traffic down.
And you can put any sort of file up there; there's no different categories of storage depending on what it is.
There is no syncing between devices or other software or any of that fancy stuff. It's all manual, although there is a nice web interface for login and file addition/maintenance.
One point about it: every image has its own specific URL which can be embedded in another web site for display purposes, so you don't have to "find" an image, download it and then upload it somewhere else if you want to put a photo up on display somewhere.
Again, not a retail product, but a very effective bulk-Cloud-storage solution that allows you to mass-store images on a pay-for-what-you-use basis, and that decouples where you have an image from where it's displayed.
