These do two different things. I thought you had free space that just needed to be added to C: This one is a recovery utility. They have a shareware pro version that probably does it all. If the 20 gb is just showing as free space and isn't really, then who knows. I've had that happen. If you can't move the "free" space maybe it needs to be repaired. You've got a good image of the drive so you can play around with it. I wonder if their Partition Master will do the same as this: http://download.cnet.com/EASEUS-Partition-Recovery/3000-2248_4-75279786.html -Clint ----- Original Message ----- This particular time it was Comodo Backup (more info on that in a later post, they have great and free software). Thanks I'll look into that. I guess it's mostly curiosity because 'theoretically' C: is faster as it is now because "C" is at the outer edges of the platter (which results in better performance, i.e. aka "short-stroking"). But of course there's point of diminishing returns if C gets not enough free space on it. -Clint God Bless, Clint Hamilton, Owner www.OrpheusComputing.com/Halloween-sales-specials.html www.OrpheusComputing.com www.ComputersCustomBuilt.com www.OrpheusComputing.com/cheap_reliable_web_hosting.html www.OrpheusComputing.com/PCworks-computer-help-email-list.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ben Moore" Which imaging software are you using? Most will now automatically resize as well as restore the image. You need something like the old Partition Magic to add that 20 gb to your C drive. I've heard good things about Easeus Partition Manager. http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10 863346.html It's free and would be worth a try. Ben Moore -----Original Message----- A few days back I had to run a restore from a disk image (some kind of SERIOUS corruption that even after several hours of DOS commands I still couldn't get it to boot). I had new HD so I decided to just use it. Since this particular backup I tried won't run from DOS, I had to install XP on the new HD, install the backup software, then it restored the backup image from the old HD. That works, but previously, and this time, I partitioned the main C: drive as C and D. With the old HD it was something roughly like 50gb and 23gb respectively (74gb Raptor). The partitions were not the same size on the new HD because it's twice the size (150gb VelociRaptor), I made them about 75/75gb on the new one. When the restore was complete I was left with a strange "phantom partition" of about 20gb. C: showed the **TOTAL** size of only about ~49gb (which is probably the size of the ORIGINAL imaged C: partition), even though it was partitioned to be 75gb on the NEW HD. D: says it's about 71gb, which IS as it was partitioned. When I looked at "Computer Management" and "Disk Management", in between "Main drive C:" and "Storage D:" is this "Free Space" partition of about ~20gb. Evidently the backup not only mirrored the data, but also **all physicalities of** the partition. I tried to delete that odd partition to reclaim the space, but the space went to the D partition. How can I get it to go back to the C: partition? I need to find a way to tell XP that this ~20gb space is PART OF the C: partition and not D.
