Clint, I learned more about the modem my ISP gave me several years ago and you might or might not be interested. I am not using that modem now, I am now using an ActionTec GT724R. The modem from my ISP is a Sprint SP642ME. It is a modem only, no router. A support person from my ISP gave me instructions on how to change my user name and password. I put xxx in place of the user name and password. ** Begin Quote ** I am sorry that your 642 is not working for you. You will have to fix both your username and password. To do this you will have to connect your 642 to your computer directly using a cross over Ethernet cable. You will know when you are using a cross over as the Ethernet light will work. Here are the steps to update the modem. 1. Open a command prompt (DOS) window. 2. Type "telnet 192.168.1.1" without quotes then hit enter 3. Enter "xxxxxxxx" without quotes as the password this is case sensitive 4. Type "4" without quotes and hit enter 5. Update the username and password in this window. Please note the username is xxxxxxxxxx@xxxxxxxxx and the password is your password. 6. Enter out of all the windows. ** End Quote ** I was able to change my user name and password and now the 642 works. When I was having streaming problems I wanted to try the Sprint modem in place of the ActionTec but my ISP had changed my user name so the Sprint modem wouldn't work. Now that I was able to get it working I'll keep it as a backup. It can not be accessed with a browser. In fact, when I wrote back to my ISP support to let them know the instructions worked and thank them, I asked about all the other settings in the telnet session. They told me in strong words, they can not discuss the internal workings of the modem and I should not make any changes other than user name and password. Telnet sure gave lots of information. Hope I did not confuse things. Thanks, Tom ** Your Message ** >You haven't said if you're using a combo modem/router. >Again, I have never seen any modem that required, nor had "in >it", any login info (as in its firmware).
