For all you folks who have illegal copies of Windows XP software installed to
be legal you have to buy the product. If you have an illegal copy of your
local newspaper (that is you or someone else stole it) and you want a legal
copy of the newspaper you have to buy it. With a newspaper, if you want to use
the legal copy you bought you have to read it. With the software, if you want
to use the legal copy you have to install it. You can buy the CD which will
have a product key with the packaging or you can buy just the license which
will not have a CD but will have a product key (you might want just the license
if you have a copy of the CD already.) You can install the software by using
the CD or you can input the legal product key. How to install the product key
is explained in Mike's file. If you have a legal CD for Me or 98 you can buy
an XP upgrade. If you want to do a clean install with the upgrade CD you can
format the drive during the installation. You will loo
 se
everything on the hard drive, including the old Me or 98. At some point you
will have to insert your Me or 98 CD to prove you own a legal copy you are
updating from. You do not have to spend the extra money for a non upgrade full
CD to do a clean install. You just have to prove you have Me or 98 by inserting
your old CD in the CD drive when asked. You also can use the upgrade CD without
wiping out the Me or 98 and it will keep your settings from Me or 98. This is
where people seem to have problems when they say they are using the upgrade CD.
By having the XP installation format the drive you wipe out the old software
and every thing else which gives you a clean new install with the upgrade CD.
Simply if you have an illegal XP that you or someone else stole you have to buy
XP to be legal. A pirated copy is a copy someone stole. Hope this helps to
explain things.
Dave
