Well shuck`s ... I thought this might be a job I could do on my own ... not . On the advice of Don and GMan I tried to install the drive in my IBM machine which has Windows XP SP2 installed on it . I found that I had no empty drive bay`s left ... so I un-installed and removed the CD player drive thinking that I would use that drive bay temporarily . I got it out ... then I thought " No wait " ... the machine boot`s up to the Floppy drive A first ...then the CD drive D second ... then my main " C " drive where Windows lives . So I got out a USB external drive enclosure that I had and put the WD400 40 gig drive in that ... having first set my jumper on the back of the drive to " Slave " ... I thought the USB plug in would bypass the boot up sequence and the P C would recognise it as a new separate drive ... which it did . However it recognizes it as CD drive D which was the designation for the CD player drive which I removed . So I right clicked on My Computer found the CD drive D and clicked it to open it . On the new page left hand side it show`s my Drive A ... and the local drive which is my " C " drive ... and all of the folder`s on my Desktop . In the right hand pane it show`s nothing ... it is a blank white screen . The header say`s CD Drive D . So I know that Windows see`s the new drive even though it is mislabeled ... I also know that the USB plug in is functioning . I went on line and read two or three page`s on formatting a new drive which this is not ... it has Ubuntu on it ... so I read about formating a drive that had been used ... it mention`s using F2 key on start up to go into the BIOS which scare`s the be-jebber`s out of me ... I have tried to stay out of that no-man`s land until now . B/T/W I do still have the two floppy`s that Do and GMan suggested ... one is the D Ban eraser and the other is Data Life Guard Tool`s H D Wiper . So it seem`s that I am staggering in ever widening circle`s ... like a little OL drunk on Saturday night . Soooo ... that`s my latest tale of woe ( frown ) .
