It's just a set of tools that give more flexibility to web pages, similar to Java applets. It allows web designers to create complex websites. For example, Microsoft's Windows Update site uses ActiveX to scan your hard drive and detect what security updates you've downloaded in the past, so that it can recommend new updates for you. This is the problem; because Microsoft use it for such a critical component as Windows Update, the downloading and usage of ActiveX components has become almost universal, even if the user never knows it. Because of this, a large number of people have created spyware, trojans and virus-like programs specifically designed to exploit any browser with ActiveX functionality.
